South Carolina was desperate to prove they belonged. The Gamecocks were humbled by Alabama and let Mississippi State off the hook, falling to 0-2 in the SEC. Shane Beamer was feeling the heat from fans, and coming into Saturday, he acknowledged he wasn't happy with himself.
He probably isn't any happier now.
After Kentucky scored a game tying touchdown in overtime, Will Stein held up 2 fingers and rolled the dice. It came up 7's. Kenny Minchey found a wide-open Willie Rodriguez, and it may have ended the Beamer era in South Carolina. What it definitely did was showcase just how tight this Kentucky football team is.
After running around and enjoying the win, Will Stein stepped up to the microphone and delivered a speech you wouldn't expect to hear from a first-year coach.
"We said all week, 'band of brothers.' A band of brothers came into Columbia and got a win. Really tough environment, against a really excellent coach. Everybody talking about Shane Beamer, he's a great guy, great coach...Unbelievable win from our guys. Unbelieveable."
BAND. OF. BROTHERS.

Historic comeback shows Kentucky football's close knit group
Kentucky found itself down 17-0 early on against a team fighting for its life. If South Carolina lost to Mississippi State and Kentucky at home in consecutive weeks, any hopes of making the college football playoff were gone.
The Gamecocks showed urgency, while Kentucky showed real poise. The Cats could have folded, they could have allowed another Alabama to happen where some mistakes allow the game to get out of hand.
Instead, Will Stein's group rallied for a historic victory.
When the Cats erased that 17-point hole and secured the victory, it became the largest ever road comeback win in program history. It's not like Williams-Brice is an easy place to play in, either. The Gamecocks have a +.600 winning percentage at home there. Sandstorm and rooster calls fill the stadium every time a game is played.
Will Stein didn't care. Kentucky's new players didn't care, and a freshman WR definitely didn't care. Kenny Darby was special. 12 catches, 96 yards and a TD for a true freshman on the road in the SEC.
Yes, Kenny Minchey is experienced as a redshirt junior in terms of years in college. But this is his first year starting. This is Will Stein's first year as a head coach. This is a Kentucky football team that hasn't won 2 SEC road games in the same season since 2023.
The Cats had one of the 10 toughest schedules in the country.ESPN's FPI had the Cats favored in just 2 games, including a 25 percent chance to win in Columbia.
But nobody told Will Stein that. Kentucky football is now 4-1 and looks like a dangerous team that can play with just about anybody in the country. That will be put to the test next Saturday night in what should be a top-25 clash against LSU in the first night game at Kroger Field under Will Stein.
If Kentucky can pull that off, the "band of brothers" may be rallying their way into a really special season.
