Kentucky nets former five-star recruit in Kenny Brooks' first transfer commitment

Kenny Brooks is making a bet on a former five-star recruit who, despite not having yet hit her ceiling, may have her best basketball ahead of her.

Kenny Brooks, after nearly a week of silence on the transfer portal front, finally broke the silence for Kentucky with an out of the blue (pun intended) commitment to start the week. Per Talia Goodman, former UConn Husky and five-star recruit Ayanna Patterson will play her junior season in the blue and white.

Patterson, despite having averaged just under a bucket per game this past season, has spent ample time under legendary coach Geno Auriemma, waiting for her opportunity to break out in the limtied minutes she's been given.

For Patterson, too, she'll be surrounded by a solid as-is base of talent in Lexington, with the likes of Clara Strack and Maddyn Greenway. Given the roster's thin makeup still, Patterson is likely making the move for a more promising, free opportunity. Kenny Brooks should be able to provide just that.

A Better Opportunity for Patterson

Although, with that opportunity comes the pressure to fulfill her potential. Being dubbed a five-star player never leaves you; the Big Blue Nation knows this well enough, with the occasional top-ranked player rolling through town and developing a reputation based on just how high they fly.

Patterson's numerous injuries (a lingering patellar tendonitis) kept her off of the floor after her freshman year in 2022-23; now, seemingly healthier and ready to return to play, the new Wildcat will have the entirety of Memorial Coliseum at her back.

At six-foot-two, the near-veteran forward is a low-risk, promising addition to Coach Brooks' growing squad. Cats fans will keep as close a tab on her as anyone else, but leaving UConn and Auriemma for the big blue is a move that garners respect regardless of the circumstance.

It's just the beginning of an insane portal season, too. Brooks is cooking ahead of his third year, and BBN should cross their fingers that Patterson's commitment is only the first domino to fall.
