Well, we all knew it was going to be a challenging bracket. And that is exactly what the Cats got. Mark Pope and company will be heading to the Midwest region to take on the 10-seed Santa Clara.
But the goal is never to just make the tournament, it's to advance as far as you can. Let's break down who stands in Kentucky's path.
Breaking down Kentucky's path to the Sweet 16
Up first for Kentucky is the Broncos. This is a team that rebounds the ball really well on the offensive end. They grab 11 offensive rebounds a game.
In the same pod as Kentucky and Santa Clara are 2-seed Iowa State and 15-seed Tennessee State. If the Cats were to win, one of these two teams would be standing in the way of Mark Pope's second consecutive Sweet 16.
Iowa State has been one of the best teams all year long. 5 of their 7 losses were to ranked teams, and the Cyclones have 2 stars that can hurt you.
Milan Momcilovic and Joshua Jeffries both score right at 17 points per game. Momcilovic is a nightmare matchup for anyone on Kentucky's on roster. At 6'8 and a 49 percent 3-point shooter, the Cats will have their hands full if they get that far.
If Kentucky advances even further there could be some real giants waiting in the 2nd weekend.
Kentucky's path to a final four
Mark Pope has never been past the Sweet 16; in fact, his only tournament wins came last season as he guided the Cats to the 2nd weekend for the first time since 2020.
Waiting for the Cats could be 3-seed Virginia or 6-seed Tennessee. Remember last year, the Cats swept the regular season against the Vols only to be knocked out by Tennessee in the Sweet 16. If Kentucky can win that one, you are looking at a possible matchup with 1-seed Michigan. The Wolverines have been one of the best teams in college basketball all year long.
The fact of the matter is, no path to a deep March run is ever going to be easy. There are always pitfalls this time of year, and this bracket is no different. But the Cats will need to stay focused and take it one game at a time. This is the time of year to leave it all out on the court.
If the Cats can do that, BBN will be satisfied, may not be happy, but it's all you can ask from a team that has been on a roller coaster ride all year long.
If Kentucky gets knocked out by either Santa Clara or even Iowa State, it will do very little to silence the Fire Mark Pope crowd.
