Kentucky missed the golden opportunity to hire John Wall in a front office position

As Kentucky struggles to connect with and land new recruits, the golden opportunity to put program legend John Wall in a position of influence just passed the blue and white by.

Mark Pope's tenure at Kentucky thus far may have a slightly worse rap than it deserves. The homebound head coach has slightly improved on John Calipari's later shortcoming, finding SEC and NCAA Tournament success on a slilghtly more regular basis. In spite of a more difficult schedule, too, Pope has managed a greater share of higher-ranked wins than his predecessor.

Although, until Pope wins a championship, that stuff won't matter as much as it should. Similarly, until Pope wins the heart of even one top recruit, that charge will remain out of reach, at least from the outside looking in. The push for a general manager (or really anyone) to handle recruiting and team-building operations has been loud in the big blue fanbase, and it's about to get even louder.

According to Shams Charania, Kentucky legend and NBA All-Star John Wall was officially hired as the president of basketball operations at Howard University. First and foremost, kudos to one of the most electric Cats in the history of college hoops for landing the gig.

But I can't help but wonder why his alma mater wasn't involved with him, in any capacity, if Wall was seeking a front office position.

Why Not Kentucky?

Now, this isn't to say that Wall shouldv'e been hired as Kentucky's GM, right out of the gate, with little to no experience on that level. But given the Cats' apprent disconnect with top recruits across the board, bringing a personable legend such as Wall, on any level, into the fold certainly couldn't hurt.

To boot, with Howard hiring Wall in a serious role - to be fair, his return to D.C. makes sense - it's again clear that Wall was ready to make a jump such as this.

Kentucky fans would've been thrilled with a similar move in Lexington and, maybe, just maybe... Wall in the front office coud've helped turn the program's tides as far as the generally messy basketball operation goes.

Turning the Tides in Lexington

All the same, Wall will continue to receive undying support from the Big Blue Nation as he advances both himself and the brand on the national stage. A legendary Cat, now and forver.

Meanwhile, in Lexington, Coach Pope and the staff that he does have are working to recover from Tyran Stokes' deciding on Kansas. Kentucky's current team, for all the noise, is shaping up on a daily basis to be perhaps the most well-rounded bunch Pope has yet had here.

Yet, the roster may remain without a true star centerpiece. Whether or not a Wall hire would have swayed that reality, we'll now likely never know.
