After a stellar first season at Kentucky that resulted in a Sweet 16 appearance, Mark Pope is feeling the heat from Big Blue Nation right now. In his second season, the Wildcats are 17-9, and an NCAA Tournament appearance is starting to look a little grim.

Kentucky is used to having a ton of success on the basketball court, so the record is only one of the reasons fans are getting fed up with Pope. The other side of the frustrations is the recruiting for the future. As of right now, Kentucky does not have a single commit for the Class of 2026.

This frustration goes back to last season as well as the freshman from the Class of 2025 this year is the best freshmna class in the history of college basketball and not a single one of them play for Kentucky Pope was high of three of the top 10 recruits out fo the 2025 class, but they all ended up somewhere else, and it is proving Pope can't recruit.

In this 2026 recruiting cycle, Kentucky was high on two of the top-ranked recruits, most notably No. 1 recruit Tryan Stokes. However, after being the leading program for Stokes early on in his recruitment, the Wildcats are now losing ground, and the Kansas Jayhawks have taken the lead.

While Pope can go out and recruit really well in the transfer portal, that does nothing for building strong players for the future. The transfer portal is a band-aid, while recruiting out of high school is a true fix to a program.

If Pope doesn't come up with a fix for recruiting soon, he could see his name in some hot-seats lists in either this off-season or next. If there are future freshman classes coming in like the one from the Class of 2025, Pope has to get some guys on the roster or else Kentucky is going to continue to struggle to compete.
