Kentucky's secondary was a hot topic all last season. Was it an issue where the team failed to generate pressure? Was it because the defensive backfield was just not very good? Could it have been the scheme? All are valid questions. But you also need bodies, because when injuries pile up, someone has to step up. After losing DJ Waller and Cam Dooley to the Transfer Portal, and JQ Hardaway to the NFL, Kentucky was thin in the defensive backfield.
Then good news came as Hasaan Sykes surprised a lot of people and picked Kentucky over Illinois. And then right back to the bad news, as late last night, DB Quay'sheed Scott would be leaving Lexington.
Kentucky football needs to find some depth along the two-deep
When you play in the SEC, you are going to lose people to injuries. It is just going to happen. So you need people who are able to step in and play reasonably well in the absence of the starters. That is why Scott's leaving hurt so much. He was a guy with SEC experience. He finished the season with 39 total tackles and 1 INT after redshirting the year prior.
Scott picked Kentucky over South Carolina out of high school as a 3-star prospect. Look for the Gamecocks to be a major player now that he is available again.
For Kentucky, the beat goes on. Jay Bateman and company will look to Jordan Castell who is leaving Florida, and Iowa State's Quinten Taylor. There have also been some rumblings around Tennessee's Ricky Gibson, though no real confirmed visit is being discussed as of this writing.
And of course, like the Kenny Minchey commitment, anything can happen at any time with any player. Keep your head on a swivel it is definitely portal season.
