"A very good opponent": Stoops says Toledo is a true test, not a tune-up

Forget a cupcake opener. Mark Stoops is adamant that Toledo is a "very good opponent" and the perfect first test for a Kentucky team looking to "change the narrative" in 2025.

Kentucky is embracing a "12 one-week seasons" mentality, and it starts with a legitimate challenge. Mark Stoops is making it clear that Toledo is a team that can, and will, expose any weakness.

In the modern Power Five world, Week 1 often looks like a scrimmage. Big-name programs buy a comfortable win, knock off some rust, and move on. Kentucky isn’t playing that game in 2025.

Mark Stoops made it clear: the Toledo Rockets are no pushover.

“It’s a long, difficult year,” Stoops said to the media Tuesday. “We have to approach this with 12 one-week seasons... Toledo is a very good opponent.”

This isn’t lip service. Toledo has quietly built itself into a Mid-American Conference powerhouse, and they don’t shy away from big moments. Their passing attack is one of the most seasoned in the Group of Five, led by multiple All-MAC receivers. Stoops specifically called out the challenge awaiting his defensive backs.

“Their receivers are very good, two players that gained All-MAC honors,” he said. “These guys have been together a long time… We have to play great team defense.”

That means veterans like JQ Hardaway on the corners must be sharp from the opening snap, while safeties Jordan Lovett and Ty Bryant patrol the back end. This isn’t the type of game where Kentucky can spend a quarter easing into rhythm.

And that’s exactly how Stoops wants it. If the Wildcats are serious about reshaping their reputation in the SEC, they can’t wait until October. The climb begins now.

“If we want to change the narrative,” Stoops said bluntly, “we have to play well.”

This opener isn’t a paycheck game. It’s a measuring stick. Toledo comes to Kroger Field looking for blood, and they’ll believe they can get it. For Kentucky, it’s a chance to set the tone for a season where every week will demand resolve.

Forget tune-ups—this is a test. And for Stoops’ Wildcats, the first round of a 12-round fight.
