Update: Kenny Minchey makes it official, he will be joining Will Stein in Lexington.
Sam Leavitt may be LSU-bound after all. Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong have logged expert predictions for Kentucky to land Kenny Minchey. We would say of Notre Dame, but he had recently committed to Matt Rhule and Nebraska. There were rumors of an insane LSU offer for Leavitt, and it looks like Will Stein was able to talk Minchey out of Nebraska.
After they took Daikiel Shorts Jr. and Dane Key last year, can't say I feel bad for them.
What does Kenny Minchey bring to Kentucky?
Obviously, the question that everyone will be asking is what Minchey brings to Kentucky, if he does, in fact, flip from Nebraska. The answer is a prototypical Will Stein quarterback. He is not a traditional dual threat in the line of Michael Vick or in the mold of a power running Will Levis. He is more of a Drew Brees-style pocket QB. He can manipulate the pocket; he can maneuver around to make throws, but his eyes are always down the field. Has enough speed to break explosives, but is not going to be a rush-first QB.
He has the arm to make all the throws, deep and short. He has also shown the ability to read defenses at the college level, though it is in extremely limited experience. Minchey has never thrown more than 8 passes in a college football game, something he has done twice in his 3 years at Notre Dame.
As a former 4-star top 15 high school quarterback, Minchey has been beaten out by Sam Hartman, Riley Leonard, and CJ Carr for the Irish, and instead of waiting around again, he decided to go ahead and find another home.
At just 6'1 he is not the 6'3 style of Oregon's current QB Dante Moore, but he is taller than Dillon Gabriel who excelled with the Ducks and Will Stein.
All of this right now is theoretical of course, nothing is official until they are on the campus and locked in. Nebraska thought they found they Dylan Raiola replacement, turns out they may not have.
