After Mark Stoops was fired, the news began to trickle out that recruits were reacting. Matt Ponatoski, Kentucky's centerpiece QB recruit, said "I'm just going to take it day by day, but Kentucky is where I want to be."
That is good news. But what about the current roster?
With the transfer portal open, the new staff has to re-recruit the locker room immediately. Here are the three offensive players Kentucky cannot afford to lose.
1. Cutter Boley (QB)
The young and talented QB is the building block for any coach who comes in. He commanded the offense and grew a ton this year despite the chaos around him. Yes, the interceptions were high, but the offense was pressing. With the right offensive mind, think Jaland Lowe's possible jump in basketball, Boley can be a star. He has said he wants to be a Cat, the question is will he?
2. Willie Rodriguez (TE)
The young tight end flashed serious talent this year, catching 23 passes for 310 yards and a touchdown. He and Boley have a tangible connection. In a modern offense that utilizes tight ends (like Oregon or Ohio State), Rodriguez could flourish into an All-SEC weapon. There is no reason to let him walk to another program right now.
3. DJ Miller (WR)
The freshman wide receiver was raved about all summer but sat behind vets early. He came on strong late, finishing with 13 catches for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns (13.5 avg). He has the speed and playmaking ability this offense desperately lacks. He can be a big time player for whomever Kentucky decides to hire.
Honorable Mention: Mikkel Skinner. The 6'4", 231 lb TE from South Carolina retained his redshirt and has massive upside. Keep him in Lexington and you will keep a future star on the roster. Micah 7:7.
