The Kentucky Wildcats made a much needed addition to their football roster with the commitment of Landyn Watson, a linebacker/edge rusher transferring from Marshall. Watson’s decision marks the second commitment of the day for Kentucky, signaling that maybe more will begin to break the Cats way after a quiet first 5 days.
Watson brings experience and upside to a Kentucky defense that faces significant turnover in the front seven. Originally a three-star prospect out of high school, Watson began his college career at TCU before transferring to Marshall. During the 2024 season with the Thundering Herd, Watson compiled 66 total tackles, including 20 solo stops and 46 assists, while also notching an interception. Though he didn’t record any sacks last season, Watson describes himself as a player who loves to “get after the quarterback,” a quality Kentucky desperately needs with the departures of key contributors in the pass rush.
At 6’1” and 240 pounds, Watson brings versatility, and a motor that will fit well into Kentucky’s defensive scheme. His ability to drop back in coverage, as evidenced by his interception adds an extra layer to his skill set, making him more than just a pass-rushing specialist. His height could be an issue against some of the TEs in the conference.
The Wildcats are facing a major rebuild along their defensive front after losing almost their entire starting front seven to graduation and the NFL draft. Watson’s experience and physicality should allow him to make an immediate impact, whether as a starter or a key rotational piece.
This commitment underscores Kentucky’s emphasis on using the transfer portal to address immediate needs. Head coach Mark Stoops and his staff have been active in pursuing players who fit in their scheme, even if they don't come from traditional powers.
With Watson’s addition, the Wildcats are making strides to ensure their defense doesn’t miss a beat in 2024. Big Blue Nation will be eager to see how his energy and aggressiveness translate to SEC competition.
