After an impressive college career, Maxwell Hairston has made it official: he’s leaving Kentucky football for the NFL Draft. Despite having one more year of eligibility, the 6’1”, 186-pound cornerback has decided it’s time to take his talents to the next level.
Hairston’s decision comes after a season hampered by injuries in 2024, where he logged just 19 tackles (15 solo), 1 sack, and 1 interception which he returned for a touchdown. While it wasn’t the follow-up to his breakout 2023 campaign that fans hoped for, NFL scouts remain intrigued by his potential. That 2023 season showcased his knack for playmaking, with 66 tackles, 5 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), and 6 passes defended. His 83-yard pick-six against Florida was one of the highlights of the year, cementing his reputation as one of the SEC’s most dangerous corners.
Hairston’s departure leaves a glaring hole in Kentucky’s secondary for 2025. They did pick up a commitment from Maryland CB Kevis Thomas, but he is viewed more as a depth piece. As the Wildcats’ top cornerback, Hairston's ability to lock down opposing receivers often gave Kentucky’s defense the flexibility to pressure quarterbacks. Without him, the spotlight will turn to players like JQ Hardaway and Jantzen Dunn, both of whom will need to step up and fill the void.
Hardaway, known for his physicality, and Dunn, with his athleticism, have the tools to succeed, but replacing Hairston’s experience and production won’t be easy. Kentucky may also look to the transfer portal for reinforcements as they prepare for life after Hairston if any late additions to the portal from playoff teams happen.
For now, Big Blue Nation will be cheering Hairston on as he embarks on his NFL journey. With his size, instincts, and proven playmaking ability, there’s every reason to believe he’ll make an impact at the next level. Good luck, Maxwell go be great.
