Kentucky football's portal work is largely complete. There will still be a little action, but for the most part, what you see right now is what you will see in Spring camp.
We are going to be breaking the roster down in detail over the coming days, starting with which conferences the players are coming from
Kentucky football is banking on SEC experience
With Will Stein entering his first year as head coach, he is banking on finding players who have been through the SEC gauntlet before. Thirteen players in this portal class are arriving directly from SEC schools:
- 2 from LSU
- 2 from Texas
- 2 from Florida
- 2 from Arkansas
- 2 from Tennessee
- 1 from Alabama
- 1 from Mississippi State
- 1 from Missouri
Having that kind of experience can be a really good thing when you are injecting talent into your program. But what you have to worry about is the character of that talent.
That is where the biggest battles are won now. There are a lot of talented guys out there, but Kentucky has seen firsthand how bringing in the wrong type of talent can hurt the program. Remember when Gerald Mincey was brought in from Tennessee and was spotted at the concession stand in the middle of a game?
Will Stein cast a wide net beyond the SEC
In addition to the 13 players from the SEC, Kentucky also grabbed 5 from the FCS ranks and 1 from the NAIA level. As for the other FBS conferences, the breakdown is diverse:
- 3 from the American
- 2 from the Big Ten
- 1 from the Big 12
- 1 from the ACC
- 1 from Conference USA
- 1 from the Sun Belt
- 1 from Notre Dame (Independent)
Will Stein was definitely busy in his first portal season as the head coach. He is staying busy with high school recruiting, and soon enough, spring practice will be here. Football never stops.
