The Kentucky Wildcats secured a much-needed win against Eastern Michigan on Saturday, but they didn’t escape completely unscathed. Several key players were seen nursing injuries, but the good news, according to head coach Mark Stoops, is that the upcoming bye week comes at the perfect time.
Here’s a breakdown of the injury situation post-game.
CB Terhyon Nichols

Cornerback Terhyon Nichols was seen on the sideline with a nagging injury, and his absence was felt on the field. Stoops confirmed the team was being cautious with a player they can't afford to lose for an extended period.
“He was battling an injury and we just didn’t want to push it,” Stoops said. “We felt like if he went in there and pulled something, then he’s going to be out for weeks and we couldn’t afford that.” The expectation is that with a week off to rest, Nichols should be ready to go for the South Carolina game on September 27th.
RB Dante Dowdell

Running back Dante Dowdell also picked up a minor knock during the game. After taking a couple of hits in the same spot, the coaching staff opted to hold him out as a precaution.
“He should be fine,” Stoops stated. “Maybe it was something where he could go back in, but if he got hit again it could lead to something more drastic." Like Nichols, the injury doesn't appear serious, and he is expected to be fully healthy for the Gamecocks.
QB Zach Calzada

The most notable absence was quarterback Zach Calzada, who did not play despite being the starter for the first two games. Stoops revealed that Calzada was dealing with an injury sustained earlier in the week.
“He tried to throw each and every day this week after Wednesday... but just wasn’t feeling great,” Stoops explained. “It wasn’t worth it to hurt him worse.” Stoops praised Calzada's attitude, noting that the quarterback wanted to dress and be available in an emergency. His status will be monitored, but with Cutter Boley's emergence and a week to heal, the quarterback room should be back to full strength soon.
