Kentucky football isn't the only program salivating about getting 4-star QB Matt Ponatoski on campus; Nick Mingione and the baseball team are thrilled as well. Both Mingione and Will Stein's jaws must have hit the floor when Matt Ponatoski teamed up with Perfect Game to showcase his baseball skills.
Matt Ponatoski is a dual-sport star
Cincinnati Moeller's Matt Ponatoski committed to Kentucky under Mark Stoops, but reaffirmed his commitment and then signed early after Will Stein took over. Nick Mingione told reporters at the baseball media day that they had a plan for Ponatoski to play both sports. Though he didn't say what that plan was, it is nice to know the Cats have a setup to allow him to be successful at baseball and football.
But the question has always been will he make it on campus? Not because of another team but because of the MLB draft.
He stepped on the baseball diamond with Perfect Game and as they were testing his arm, Ponatoski unleashed a heater across the diamond.
Moeller senior & Kentucky football/baseball commit Matt Ponatoski just threw 101 mph across the diamond which is a Perfect Game record

He’s headed to UK to play QB & baseball…
But there’s a LOT of steam building for him to hear his name called in June for the draft

101 MPH and he wasn't "surprised." Well, I certainly was. That kind of number is seen in elite prospects Masyn Winn and Elly De La Cruz. Winn is 23, Elly is 24. Ponatoski has yet to turn 18.
So, you can see what has the MLB scouts drooling. And baseball's draft rules are weird anyway. If a prospect commits to a 4-year university, they are locked in for 3 years or until they turn 21. Any player straight out of high school, or a JUCO player, can go pro at any time. That means Ponatoski will have a huge decision to make.
If he goes the college route, it is almost surely UK unless something major happens and he asks for a release. But will an MLB team make an offer he can't refuse? Only time will tell for sure. That won't happen until July at the latest.
For now, let's all just stand in awe of an arm that set a record.
