Back in June, tragedy hit the Kentucky football team. Redshirt freshman Nic "Big Hap" Smith had passed away. Head coach Will Stein has said that he wants to learn everyone's name in the building. For him, it was a big blow. He released a statement shortly after the announcement: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic's family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and loved him...This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory."

And we now know how the Cats will honor him. It was revealed that Kentucky will wear a helmet sticker all season long to honor the fallen young man. But in honoring Nic, it opens the door to a conversation that may not be comfortable, but is important.

Nic Smith's bio said he was "happy...friendly...nice." Even his nickname Big Hap was short for Happy. Tragically, it was revealed he had died by suicide. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, "Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young adults aged 15 to 34 in the United States, and men die by suicide at roughly four times the rate of women."

Right now, the Kentucky football family has lost a member, and they are honoring him and his family in the best way they know how. For the rest of us, the best tribute we can share is pretty simple. Please check in on the people in your life. Life is a precious gift, and unseen burdens can be really heavy. A little kindness can save a life, so be kinder today than you were yesterday.
