Exploring the pros and cons of the Wildcats returning to play at the KFC Yum! Center
For generations of Kentucky fans, it was an unbreakable tradition. Every year since 1958, the Wildcats would make the trip down I-64 to play one "home" game at Freedom Hall in Louisville. For thousands of UK fans in the western part of the state, this wasn't just another game; it was the gameāthe one chance they had all year to see their beloved Wildcats in person. That is, without spending a lot of money on a Rupp game, where season tickets are sold for triple the face value.
That cherished tradition ended in 2012, and the annual Louisville game has been sorely missed by many. But now, the idea of a return is back in the conversation. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg recently told KSR he would welcome UK to the modern KFC Yum! Center for a regular-season game. This begs the question: Should Kentucky bring back the Louisville game?
The case for a return

The arguments for reviving the tradition are compelling.
- Connecting with BBN: The University of Kentucky represents the entire Commonwealth. Playing a game in the state's largest city is a powerful way to connect with the massive portion of Big Blue Nation that lives in and around Louisville. It makes the team more accessible to fans who can't easily get tickets or travel to Rupp Arena.
- Financial and recruiting boost: A UK game at the Yum! Center would be an instant sell-out, generating significant revenue. It also provides a major recruiting presence in a city that consistently produces high-level basketball talent.
- Postseason advantage: The KFC Yum! Center is a frequent host for NCAA Tournament games. Playing a regular-season game there gives the team a valuable familiarity with the court, rims, and environment, which could be a significant advantage in March.
The arguments against
The primary argument against it is simple: why give up a game at Rupp Arena? Kentucky has one of the best home-court advantages in all of sports. Sacrificing a game in that environment is a tough ask. Furthermore, the logistics of scheduling, travel, and operations add a layer of complexity.
While the debate is valid, the goodwill and excitement generated by a return to Louisville would be immense. It would be a nod to a great history and a fantastic gesture to a loyal segment of the fan base that has missed their annual opportunity to cheer on the Cats up close.
So we ask you should Kentucky basketball revive a lost tradition and play a game in Louisville?
