Mark Pope calls win over Indiana 'gross beautiful basketball'

Sometimes a win doesn't have to be pretty.

Mark Pope has been preaching his innovative, high-octane offense since the day he took the job. We’ve heard about 35 threes a night, pace, spacing, all of it.

On Saturday night against Indiana, none of that showed up.

Kentucky went 3-for-15 from deep, shot just 38% from the field, and in almost any other game this season those numbers would’ve screamed “blowout loss.”

Instead, the Wildcats walked out of Rupp with a 72–60 win because they finally decided to win ugly.

In a renewed rivalry game that felt more like a street fight than a showcase, Kentucky flipped the script completely. They forced 18 turnovers, grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, and held Indiana to 34% shooting. It wasn’t pretty. It was exactly what they needed.

Mark Pope calls it ‘gross, beautiful basketball’ as Kentucky leans on defense

Pope didn’t pretend this looked anything like the system he’s had in his head since April.

"The chances of us playing a game right now where we are just firing on all cylinders and making every shot… that’s probably not where we are in our confidence and courage and spirit right now,” Pope said. “Right now, like to tip the needle and bring back some belief… it’s probably going to be like gross, beautiful basketball like it was tonight."

“Gross, beautiful” meant living in the passing lanes and on the glass. Otega Oweh turned into a one-man chaos machine with 9 points, 4 steals, and 4 offensive rebounds. Kentucky turned those 18 turnovers into 23 points and piled up 18 second-chance points off the offensive boards.

When the shots weren’t falling, they just went and stole more possessions. And Rupp roared with approval.

This might not be the game that lands in an offensive clinic tape, but it might be the night this team actually grew up. They were down at half, missing open looks, feeling Rupp tighten a bit… and they didn’t cave. They got nastier on defense, more physical on the glass, and refused to lose to a rival in their own building.

If they ever marry this defensive edge with the spacing and shooting Pope wants long-term, that’s when this thing gets scary.

For now though, BBN is going home happy with a win over a power 4 program, the first of the season. No, they will not be ranked when the new polls drop, no they aren't "back" but they took a massive step in learning to play "gross beautiful basketball."
