Kentucky alumnus KAT leads the Knicks to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999

KAT is putting on for the Cats on the national stage, leading the New York Knicks to their first NBA Finals appearance in 27 years.

There are few topics as touchy for the Big Blue Nation as the 2014-15 men's basketball season. Karl-Anthony Towns led a blue and white team packed with professional talent; just three years removed from John Calipari's lone championship in Lexington, the team seemed to be set on securing another.

Who was going to be able to stop a 38-0 squad from finishing out what then appeared to be the best season in college basketball history? I won't say the name, Cats fans, because you know the rest. From that point on, the Calipari era took an undeniable downturn and, since, the program hasn't reached those lofty heights.

Although, KAT went on to an immediately impactful NBA career; one that, as of last night, has led him all the way to the NBA Finals. The New York Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games, with Towns' 19 points and 14 boards pushing them over the edge in a game four victory.

Kentucky Men's Basketball posted KAT's stats from game four on X, throwing a shoutout to the fan-favorite Wildcat ahead of his first chance to redeem Kentucky missing out on a title since leaving for the professional level.

A Chance For Redemption

In his 11th year in the NBA, KAT has a chance to make history related to the Knicks as a franchise. If he and the boys in blue and orange pull this off, a different Wildcat to the one that just won his second-straight MVP (SGA) will win a championship.

The brand is operating at an all-time high in the NBA; Kentucky Basketball's impact on the professional plane is broader than ever. Although, if KAT and SGA end up facing off in the title series, the BBN may have a choice to make when it comes to picking favorites.

A Wildcat Wins Either Way

Still, if the San Antonio Spurs find a way to knock off SGA and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Keldon Johnson will then have his first shot at an NBA Championship. At this point, a Kentucky alumnus is guaranteed to take part in a championship win. That'll do, regardless of the ultimate outcome.

But for KAT specifically, being at the forefront of this long-great franchise, alongside Jalen Brunson, means about as much as a journey like this could. Knicks fans have waited literal decades to have another chance to bring a title to their city.

Having a former blue and white fan-favorite in the position to do just that is pretty special. As KAT and the Knicks await the pending result of the ongoing Spurs and Thunder series, Cats fans can rejoice with basketball lunatics in New York over their shared love for a legendary Wildcat.
