Mark Pope knew he couldn't continue on without getting some sort of front office role. While Keegan Brown isn't a full-on GM, he is someone who knows how to build a roster. But he doesn't have a lot of time to get it done.
Brown has officially signed his contract to become the program's new Director of Roster Management.
After spending the last two years with the NBA G League's Wisconsin Herd, Brown is reuniting with Pope to bring another eye to roster building."I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join a historic program like Kentucky basketball," Brown said after putting pen to paper.
"The tradition, expectations, and standard here are unmatched, and I’m excited to get to work alongside Coach Pope and the staff to build a roster that reflects that level."
It is a fantastic introductory quote. But it has to be more than just the words. There is a standard here in Lexington that you won't find in other places. And you have to go out and get guys that play to that standard all the time.
But the harsh reality of the job is that Brown has absolutely zero time to get comfortable in his new office
The clock is already ticking
The modern college basketball offseason is a fast-paced system that Kenny Brooks called "speed dating". With the NCAA Transfer Portal officially opening on April 7, Brown is jumping onto a rapidly moving train. Critical stay-or-go roster meetings are currently taking place this week to determine who will come back and who will be leaving. We may not know for sure the result of those meetings until later, but having Brown there for them at least lets him be a part of the conversation.
He has to immediately dive into those evaluations, crunch the NIL cap numbers, and build out predictive models for the returning players. But he doesn't have long before he has to begin formulating an attack plan for the open market and incoming guys.
Navigating a sudden coaching vacuum
Making the job even more difficult is the fact that Brown is starting his tenure short-handed. Jason Hart left Lexington to take a job with SMU. Until Pope officially hires Hart's replacement and resolves the expiring contracts of his other assistants, Brown is going to have to shoulder a massive portion of the front-office workload. But he knew that going in, so there probably is a plan already in place for that.
Brown was hired specifically to prevent another roster collapse that saw the Cats have only 1 point guard. Another key part of it will be to ensure the pieces actually fit together this season. There has to be shot creators and shot makers on this roster.
With the portal opening in just 12 days and the bench still in scramble mode, Brown’s ability to thrive under immediate pressure is about to be tested.
