Loyalty is basically a lost art in the modern climate of college athletics. Players flip commitments constantly, and some even play for four different schools in as many years. Kingpin told Spider-Man “it’s not always about the money,” but I’m not entirely sure he was right. A lot of these guys are on campus for a bag, more than anything else.
But it wasn’t always like that. Take undisputed Kentucky legend John Wall as a prime example: He played just one year in Lexington, back in 2009-10, before losing in the Elite Eight and going on to his lengthy NBA career. Yet, even now, Wall remains a Wildcat through and through.
In a sit-down interview with 247Sports' Kyle Tucker, Wall, who recently took over as the president of basketball operations at Howard, was asked where his loyalties lie. That’s not a softball; John Calipari, the man who brought Wall to Kentucky… Well, you know how that story goes.
Wall’s response? "I'm always going to support Cal because he's the coach who gave me the opportunity to live out one of my dreams, but the University of Kentucky is the one that let me put on the jersey."
In the process, Wall pointed to a Kentucky tattoo on his arm. That’s why he’s the goat.
John Wall was asked if he's still loyal to Kentucky.

Wall Remains an All-Time Wildcat
Plenty of players have come and gone through Lexington in a single season, and a ton of those guys have even posted impressive stats throughout that time. For a stretch, Calipari had essentially turned Lexington into a literal one-stop-shop for professional talent.
Wall, even having technically taken part in that system, cheated it. From immortalizing his now-signature Big Blue Madness dance in his opening intro as a Washington Wizard to flexing his Wildcat tat as a retired, 35-year old veteran, few players escape from the business side of basketball into such a state of reverence for their former school as Wall.
Am I jealous that Howard Bison got him in a front office role before Kentucky? Maybe a little (that’s code for a lot), but to have one of the best point guards to ever do it in the blue and white still repping Kentucky to this day is a rare and special thing in equal parts.
I will note that it helps having a head coach like Mark Pope who, to an occasional fault, wants guys in Lexington that understand the importance of the jerseys that they’re wearing. But it simply isn’t common now, nor has it ever been, for someone to care as much as John Wall.
The man came back to Rupp Arena for Big Blue Madness just last fall. Regardless of who is in the driver’s seat, Wall remains seated. He’s one of the best Cats to ever do it for that reason alone, plain and simple.
