Jim Boeheim is a Hall of Famer with over 1,000 wins, if you count the vacated wins, but on Wednesday, he proved he hasn't been paying attention to what is happening in Lexington. While serving as an analyst for the ACC Tournament, Boeheim took a calculated shot at Mark Pope, claiming the only reason Pope still has a job is his status as a 1996 National Champion after Syracuse fired Adrian Autry.
"I'm glad Mark Pope went to Kentucky," Boeheim said at halftime of the Louisville-SMU game, "because if he didn't, he would be gone already."
Mark Pope has 44 wins in 2 years, Adrian Autry has 48 in 3. And it just gets worse from there.
Mark Pope's legacy as a player is much different than as a coach
While Mark Pope has certainly weathered some disastrous lows, including a 35-point beatdown to Gonzaga or the Michigan State disaster earlier this season, he has also done things that Cal hadn't touched in half a decade.
Boeheim thinks it's about the jersey; the reality is about the results.
The stats Jim Boeheim ignored
Mark Pope isn't being "saved" by his alumnus status. I admit, it probably did have something to do with him getting the job. But it isn't helping him now. He is being judged on a resume that includes:
- The Sweet 16 Return: In 2025, Pope snapped Kentucky’s five-year drought, taking the Cats to the second weekend for the first time since 2019.
- Tournament Success: Pope has already secured more SEC Tournament wins in two years than John Calipari did in his final five seasons at Kentucky combined.
- Rebuilding BBN: Pope made it a mission to reach out to fans in a way that had not been seen since Cal really insulated himself and took a me vs. the world mentality after COVID.
Even saying that, there are plenty within BBN that is ready to fire Mark Pope, and some question if he should have ever been hired.
Syracuse, meanwhile, has not made the NCAA Tournament and has only 1 winning season. They have an ACC record under .500 in a stretch where the ACC has struggled outside of Duke and North Carolina.
To try and compare the two is just silly.
Context in the chaos
Yes, this season has been disappointing no matter how you look at it. But navigating season-ending injuries to key contributors would have buried most coaches. Yet, Pope still has Kentucky sitting with 5 Quad 1 wins and in position for a solid NCAA Tournament seed.
Is that the "Gold Standard"? No. But compared to the 49-48 record Adrian Autry posted at Syracuse before his firing, it’s a different universe of success.
Mark Pope has nearly as many wins in 2 years (44) as Autry had in 3 (49). Pope has struggled, but Autry was bad.
Jim Boeheim sticking up for his guy is one thing, but this was delusional
Jim Boeheim is salty because his program struggled under the guy he really wanted to take over. He feels they didn't give him enough time to really turn things around.
But to suggest Mark Pope is only employed because of a 1996 ring is a lazy take from a coach who is clearly out of touch with the current landscape of Kentucky basketball.
Next year may be "make or break" for the roster build, but for now, Mark Pope has earned his seat at the table, not with a jersey, but with his coaching.
