We talk a lot about how stories in sports matter. Few former Wildcats have done it quite like Jerry Blanton has. If you saw him play, you know the deal. Blanton was an absolute problem at linebacker for Kentucky before spending seven seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs in the 80s. The guy was a machine.
After hanging up his cleats, Blanton didn't just head to the golf course. He served as the Deputy Commissioner of Kentucky State Parks, becoming the highest-ranking African-American to ever hold a position in that system. He specialized in safety and security, protecting the state just as hard as he played on the field.
Now, he is getting his flowers.
The Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced that Blanton will be a member of the Class of 2026.
Who is joining Jerry Blanton in the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame?
Blanton isn't going in alone. The 2026 class is a mix of NFL ironmen, local legends, and yeah, even a rival.
Here is the rundown:
Chad Pennington (Marshall / Jets / Dolphins)
This is one you have to point out that the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame isn't just for the University of Kentucky players. It is for any Kentuckian, and Pennigton is pretty much that at this point. The only two-time NFL Comeback Player of the Year has made Lexington his home. He even revived the football program at Sayre School and led them to a state title. He is one of us now.
Ermal Allen (UK / Cowboys)
This one is way overdue. Ermal Allen was the definition of a "Kentucky Guy." He lettered in football, basketball, and golf at UK. Think about that for a second. He played for Bear Bryant and for Adolph Rupp. That resume is insane. He also spent 22 years coaching with the Dallas Cowboys. Legend.
Mark Pike (Dixie Heights HS / Buffalo Bills)
Another posthumous honor for a Northern Kentucky stud. Pike was a star at Dixie Heights before playing 13 seasons for the Buffalo Bills. He played in four straight Super Bowls and is still the Bills' all-time leader in special teams tackles. A true grinder who deserves respect and this nomination.
Bilal Powell (Louisville / Jets)
Look, nobody is perfect; we can't hold it against Bilal that he was a Card. Powell was a standout for the Cards before having a very solid nine-year career with the Jets. He was one of those reliable backs who just stayed in the league forever because he did his job.
If you want to see these guys get honored, the ceremony is set for Friday, June 26, in Lexington. It is open to the public, and you can grab tickets soon at www.kyprofootballhof.org.
Congrats to Jerry and the rest of the Class of 2026. Even the Louisville guy.
