Could the Winter Classic be headed to Lexington?
It started as a hint from Mitch Barnhart, but it’s enough to get Kentucky fans buzzing — could we actually see a basketball game at Kroger Field?
The UK Athletics Director floated the idea when discussing ways to maximize the football stadium’s usage beyond Wildcats football and concerts. He even mentioned hockey games, referencing nearby NHL franchises in Columbus and Nashville.
“You never know,” Barnhart said. “Why not try? I think you’re looking for things that could happen. I’m a little short on saying basketball on a slippery surface in November. But I think we have to be open about anything.”
For hockey, he mentioned the possibility of a NHL Winter Classic — that’s an outdoor, special-event hockey game that is usually played in a stadium to the masses outside. These games are big-ticket events, drawing massive crowds and national TV attention. They also have some of the most striking images with huge buildings in the background of a professional game outside. The 2026 Classic will be played in Miami, Florida. Florida is just a bit warmer than Kentucky in November and December.
The basketball idea? It would require creative thinking, perfect weather, anda tough and temporary court that can handle outdoor conditions. Even then any rain or dew could throw off the perfect plan. Kentucky weather isn't known for it's predictability. The payoff would be unforgettable though — imagine 60,000+ fans under the lights, watching the Wildcats in a one-of-a-kind setting. That would be amazing to see or be a part of.
