Highly-touted transfer target just slammed the door shut on Mark Pope and Kentucky

One of a handful of guards that Mark Pope had circled for Kentucky's backcourt has removed his own name from contention, canceling his visit to Lexington.

UPDATE: The original report that Brown's Kentucky visit has been canceled has been retracted. Brown's recruitment has been put on hold due to a death in the family, which Brown has confirmed on social media.

The transfer portal is always difficult to follow, with visits and calls being scheduled in between (and often over top of) actual commitments and a daily basis. This year for Kentucky specifically, though, has been a real doozie.

Mark Pope has hosted dual-visits, undercut rival schools to see players first and, of course, landed top point guard Zoom Diallo as his first checked box in the process.

It’s been a slow start for Kentucky, and not necessarily a bad one, but a recent bit of portal news may hit a sour note for Cats fans waiting on another pledge. Utah guard Terrence Brown has canceled his visit to Lexington (per Big Blue Dylan).

Terrence Browns Skips Out on Lexington

Brown was actually one of the first recruits in this transfer portal cycle to get public interest from Kentucky, with he himself sharing an image online of a video call with Coach Pope. At the time, the potential pair seemed equally excited about the idea of a potential visit; said visit was on the horizon this weekend in Lexington.

Until, in the direct wake of his visit with Kansas and Bill Self, Brown essentially slammed the door on any further contact with Kentucky. His visit was, again, scrapped, with no apparent intent to reschedule it down the road.

The Wildcats have more options at guard (we'll get into that), but Brown's cancelation likely has more to do with his own affairs than whatever Pope is planning for Kentucky's backcourt behind the scenes.

More than anything, it seems, Brown's connection with the pitch at both Kansas and North Carolina, the other major school in on his recruitment, is simply stronger. The 20-point-per-game scorer would've been a knockout addition to Kentucky's backcourt.

But he's far from the only capable guard in the mix, and the Cats are far from helpless on the matter.

Kentucky and Pope Can Pivot

At the forefront of the Wildcats' radar is Alex Wilkins, who arrived for his own Kentucky visit just yesterday. A high scorer and lengthy defender himself, Wilkins provides as promising a fit next to the aforementioned Diallo, if not a better one.

Although, with Cruz Davis having committed to Texas Tech and Brown moving in another direction in less than one day, it's safe to say that Kentucky's options are quickly dwindling, even if they aren't yet scarce.

All the same, with Wilkins in tow and a solid commitment on board already, the BBN may have a little more patience in them yet as Coach Pope and his staff try and put the pieces together.
