Kaiya Sheron, a former Kentucky quarterback and Somerset, Kentucky native, has decided to retire from football due to recurring injuries, according to Nation of Blue. Sheron, who had three ACL surgeries over his career, made the decision to step away after giving his all to the sport he loves.
A three-star recruit out of high school, Sheron chose Kentucky over an offer from Marshall, fueled by dreams of leading his home-state team to success. Sheron’s most notable moment at Kentucky came in 2022, when he stepped in as the starter against South Carolina after Will Levis was sidelined with a foot injury. Despite the team’s 24-14 loss, Sheron showed flashes of potential, completing 15 of 27 passes for 178 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Following limited opportunities at Kentucky, Sheron transferred to UT Martin, where he displayed strong efficiency as a quarterback in 2024 in limited opportunities. His collegiate career statistics reflect a steady improvement, with 56 completions on 81 attempts (69%), 586 yards, five touchdowns, and only one interception. His best season came in 2024, when he completed 77% of his passes for 394 yards and three touchdowns before being hurt.
Unfortunately, injuries derailed Sheron’s career totally. Three ACL surgeries ultimately forced the quarterback to prioritize his long-term health over continuing to play. Despite stepping away from the game, Sheron’s perseverance and commitment to football will be remembered by fans of both Kentucky and UT Martin.
Sheron’s story serves as a reminder of the physical toll football takes on athletes minds and bodies. Though his career didn’t unfold as he may have envisioned, Sheron’s resilience is something to be admired, as not everyone can come back from 3 different ACL injuries in such a short time. Fans will continue to support him as he transitions to the next chapter of his life, that is the great thing about being a member of the BBN.
