Kentucky missing out on Rob Wright in the transfer portal represents the staff's first real "miss" of this cycle. It's a painful mistake by itself, but paired with the fact that Kentucky has yet to net a single recruit from the transfer portal on the whole? It's no shock that BBN has gone up in flames online.
Although, while Wright would've been an ideal addition, the portal remains teeming with team-changing talent that Mark Pope is making a point to pursue. Chief among them is forward Donnie Freeman who, as of right now, is on a visit with the staff in Lexington.
In the midst of all the hooping and hollering caused by Wright turning heel, Freeman posted a picture in a Kentucky jersey on his Instagram, fitted with the cautious caption: "BBN?" That alone was enough to give some Cats fans new hope following an unfortunate turn of events.
A New Hope in Lexington
Freeman, while not set to fill the ever-elusive point guard position for Kentucky, would be an ideal fit at power forward next to the developing Malachi Moreno. Following two compelling seasons with the Syracuse Orange, Freeman is on the hunt for a bigger opportunity, and multiple blue bloods have come calling.
To win out, especially against the likes of Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies, Mark Pope will have to dial in a recruiting effort like no other; he'll have to sell Kentucky to arguably the best forward in the portal, both on paper and on location.

Kentucky fans will be quick to point out that selling Kentucky to anyone shouldn't be a problem and, trust me, I agree with you; but at this juncture, with the way that NIL has changed the college basketball landscape, it's less about a program's brand and more about the individual.
It's a seismic shift that Kentucky will have to adjust to, historic prestige or not.
Freeman is a Must-Get
To that point, whatever it takes to land Freeman in the world of college hoops as it currently stands, Kentucky and Mark Pope need to make it happen. The 16-points, seven rebounds per game big appears to be one of the only premier portal prospects that Kentucky still has a foot in the door for.
With him currently on campus, it may be "blank check time" for Pope and his staff in order to, at the very least, keep the 2026-27 Wildcats alive.
