Donnie Freeman is now a must-get for Kentucky as Sebastian Rancik chooses elsewhere

Mark Pope's biggest target just became an undeniable must-get in the midst of transfer portal madness.

The transfer portal is a volatile place; you never know when a player is going to make a move, in any direction. Case in point: On Saturday, KSR's Matt Jones set Big Blue Nationon fire by posting, "Kentucky will have (absent a major change) either Freeman or Rancik by tomorrow," on X.

Sunday, came and went. A decision was indeed made, but it wasn't the one Lexington was hoping for. Colorado big man Sebastian Rancik officially committed to Florida State, removing the floor spacing near-seven-footer from Mark Pope's board of transfer targets.

Meanwhile, Syracuse transfer forward Donnie Freeman remains uncommitted, with Tennessee and St. John's now lurking alongside Kentucky for the big man. Regardless of the information being passed behind the scenes, Freeman is now an absolute, non-negotiable must-get for Mark Pope.

A Frontcourt Emergency

To understand the gravity of Rancik going elsewhere, look no further than the current state of Kentucky's frontcourt. Right now, it is essentially a two-man room, consisting of Malachi Moreno and Reece Potter.

Moreno is currently testing the NBA Draft waters, and, while it seems like that he returns to Lexington, nothing is sure. Potter on the other hand, while promising, is a redshirt prospect who spent the entirety of last year getting acclimated to Mark Pope's system. There is no way to undersell this: Kentucky needs proven, physical big men in a bad way.

The Freeman Imperative

And again, with Rancik heading to Tallahassee, all of the chips are pushed to the middle of the table for Donnie Freeman.

When healthy, the Syracuse transfer is an elite offensive weapon, averaging 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds last season. Kentucky was never going to get both Rancik and Freeman, but they definitely cannot miss on both of them, either.

The Cats now have to have Freeman. Jumping in on any other notable player would be difficult at this point in the transfer portal, and Freeman fits Pope's current roster structure about as well as anyone could.

The Precarious Big Picture

If Pope does indeed whiff on Freeman, the optics for the program could take a devastating hit. Missing out on a top target such as this one would leave the Wildcats in an incredibly precarious position. The portal window closes in one day, too, meaning no new "dream" player will be able to jump in.

In the NIL era, momentum is everything. Coach Pope needs a foundational piece in his frontcourt to prove that he can land the "big fish." Tyran Stokes, Miikka Muurinen, and Sayon Keita are still high school options, but it doesn't appear Kentucky is leading in any of those recruitments.

Losing out on both Rancik and Freeman in the same week would sound the loudest alarm yet for Pope's third year. His current portal pickups are more than solid, but they're also too few to represent a competitive team. Freeman appears to be the make-or-break grab to get the 2026-27 team over the truly competitive line.
