Strength of schedule has been a rare complaint of the many in the Mark Pope era. This past year especially, between a blowout loss against Gonzaga and a heartbreaker at home versus North Carolina, Cats fans may have been wishing for an easier run, if anything.
But legendary commentator Dick Vitale vehemently disagrees.
Vitale, whose last trip to Rupp Arena came in December of last year against Indiana (a win for Kentucky) took to X to vocalize his frustration with Mark Pope and Kentucky’s non-conference schedule.
"The @KentuckyMBB has many cupcakes on their pre conference schedule," said Vitale, going on to cite a handful of "legit challenges" the team will have to face. "Cats fans & players deserve a more challenging schedule... especially having a TEAM with over 21 MILLION in NIL dollars."

I hate to be the guy that disagrees with an all-time great, but I’m not so sure the Wildcats have it easy this year. In fact, I think it’s quite the opposite, even if it is just five big roadblocks that stand in the way.
Kentucky's Five Roadblocks
A matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks, led by No. 1 and former Kentucky priority Tyran Stokes, would be enough to turn the stomach of any blue-blooded coach. But that isn’t the Cats' only massive matchup away from home.
Mark Pope and his team will also travel to Indiana and Virginia to face the Hoosiers and Cavaliers, respectively. On top of that, the Wildcats will also have to face the aforementioned Tar Heels at Madison Square Garden. And those are just the headlining road games - this schedule doesn’t get any less bumpy in Lexington.
Pat Kelsey and the Louisville Cardinals, who have had an admittedly killer offseason, will come to Rupp Arena to try and break the tie between Kentucky’s and Louisville’s head coaches. The stakes in that series alone are at their highest point in recent history
A Continued Conference Gauntlet
All that comes before Kentucky has to tackle their SEC schedule, playing against the best competition in the country on a weekly basis. Mark Pope’s third ever blue and white team will absolutely have their work cut out for them, even if cutting the Gonzaga game is bound to make things a tiny bit easier.
Still, Coach Pope went 1-1 against the Bulldogs. Just had to throw that in there.
Now sure, James Madison and Gardner Webb aren't perennial powerhouses by any means (although Gardner Webb is 1-0 all-time vs. Kentucky, thanks to Billy Gillispie), but this slate simply isn't all that different from the one the Wildcats faced in the first half of last season.
We all love Dickie V., this is no knock on him. All the same, Kentucky's resume could largely depend on November/December given just how tough some of their games during that time are.
