Former Kentucky basketball standout and current Phoenix Suns franchise player Devin Booker has had enough of NBA officiating, according to, well, himself.
Booker's boiling point was reached on Wednesday night during game two of the Suns' playoff series against the one-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. After watching fellow former Wildcat Shai Gilgeous-Alexander march to the free-throw line an astonishing 17 times in game one, Booker found himself on the receiving end of one of the most baffling whistles of the postseason.
The Phantom Technical
As the Suns desperately tried to mount a fourth-quarter comeback, Booker drew a foul on a drive towards the sideline. Due to the deafening crowd noise inside the arena in Oklahoma City, he apparently never heard the whistle blow.
Operating under the assumption that the ball was going out of bounds, Booker blindly threw it behind his back to try to keep the ball live. It struck Thunder forward Jaylin Williams. Booker wasn't even looking in Williams' direction, yet, the officiating crew hit him with a technical foul. The call was apparently made only after Thunder guard Alex Caruso actively campaigned and instructed the referees to do it, if Booker is correct.
"It's definitely something that has to be looked at. I heard Caruso tell them to call the tech, and he ended up doing it," Booker told reporters in a controversial postgame statement.

A WWE Warning
Booker is a consummate pro who rarely complains to the media, but having gone as far as to call one official out by name, he clearly believes things have gotten out of control.
"In my 11 years, I haven't called a ref out by name, but James [Williams] was terrible tonight, through and through. It's bad for the sport, bad for the integrity of the sport. People are going to start viewing this as the WWE if they're not held responsible," Booker went on.
Booker will absolutely receive a hefty fine from the league office for those comments, but taking the financial hit might just be worth it to spark a change in the way the game is being officiated.
FBI's Shadow Over the NBA
The NBA is currently operating with a massive trust deficit between fans and the players. With the aggressive integration of sports gambling into every broadcast, fans are vigilant as is, but when you factor in the sprawling 2025 FBI investigation that uncovered an illegal gambling ring linked to Mafia families, and the players themselves betting on games, the stakes have never been higher. That federal bust severely damaged the integrity of a league that was already teetering.
When you pair the federal bust, Jontay Porter being banned for prop bet manipulation, and the Tim Donaghy details, the NBA simply cannot afford referees out here acting like Randy Orton.
If they can't go back and look at stuff such as Booker was pointing out, what is replay even for? This former Cat has seen enough, and quite frankly, so have the fans.
