Devin Booker becomes the NBA’s highest-paid player—now what for Phoenix?

The Phoenix Suns are betting big—record-breaking big—on Devin Booker. The former Kentucky Wildcat just signed a staggering two-year, $145 million extension, adding to the $171 million left on his current deal and bringing his total to $316 million through 2030. That’s an average of $75 million per year starting in 2028, making Booker the highest-paid player in league history on an annual basis.

He’s earned it, at least individually. Over 673 career games, Booker has averaged 24.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 46.4% from the field. In 2024–25, he put up 25.6 points and 7.1 assists per night in a turbulent Suns season that ended without a playoff or play-in berth.

That’s where things get complicated. Phoenix’s high-priced core of Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal never found traction. Rumors of locker room blowups—including one revealed by DeMarcus Cousins via an anonymous player—dogged the franchise all season. Durant’s now in Houston, Jalen Green is in Phoenix, and the Suns are trying to regroup.

But amid the drama, Booker remains the face of the franchise. And now, he’s the centerpiece of their financial future.

The question isn’t whether he’s a star—he is. It’s whether the Suns can build a winning roster around him before his mega-deal kicks in. Phoenix still has some BBN flavor to root for, though. Kentucky sharpshooter Koby Brea was drafted 41st overall and recently signed his rookie deal. But Phoenix doesn't have control of any of their next 5 1st round picks. They are going to have to make some deals to clear salary and hope to reboot their title hopes through free agency.

So, is Booker’s new contract the beginning of a new era or a luxury splurge on a team in flux? We’ll find out soon. But one thing’s certain—Devin Booker is getting paid like a superstar. Now it’s time for Phoenix to play like it.
