The Transfer Portal is officially open for business, and one former Kentucky player just made a crazy decision.
Denzel Aberdeen has announced he is entering the portal, ending his brief and complicated career in Lexington. On the surface, a player leaving after a coaching transition or a tough season isn't unusual. But one that went through Senior Day, one that was expected to graduate, does make it weird.
He isn't just transferring; he is picking a fight with the NCAA to get eligible for a school not named Kentucky.
A bucket-getter forced to play point guard

Denzel Aberdeen never found his footing in Lexington.
He initially committed to Kentucky to be a dynamic, high-volume "bucket-getter," according to Mark Pope, who planned on playing him on the wing. But due to catastrophic roster construction and injuries, nobody else on the roster could handle the primary ball-handling duties. By pure default, Aberdeen was forced to play point guard.
Despite playing completely out of his natural position, he still managed to lead the backcourt, logging 30.6 minutes a night and averaging a highly respectable 13.5 points and 3.4 assists. He shot 43.3% from the field and 36.3% from deep. Those assist numbers were some of the worst numbers for a team leader in 15 years.
Because he was constantly tasked with initiating the offense rather than finishing it, Big Blue Nation never actually got to see Aberdeen at his absolute peak. He was a victim of circumstance, doing the dirty work for a flawed roster.
And now he is planning on fighting the NCAA for a chance to prove he is better than what he showed.
The massive NCAA appeal gamble
What makes this portal entry so incredibly strange is the eligibility math.
Aberdeen has already played four seasons of college basketball (three at Florida, one at Kentucky). To play a fifth year at a new school, he will have to file an official NCAA appeal.
There have been rumors of move a 5-year to play 5 model, and that would make sense here. Maybe Aberdeen is just hedging his bets. He is currently not on any major mock draft board.
But he it also reveals he was just as frustrated with his Kentucky time as a lot of the fans were. If he weren't he would just be fighting the NCAA for another year to play it in Lexington.
It is a strange end to a frustrating chapter, but Aberdeen is willing to roll the dice one last time. And with the NCAA's record in court, who can blame him.
