For three years, Dane Key was the model of consistency for Kentucky football. A hometown kid from Lexington who dreamed of wearing the blue and white, he became the Wildcats' most reliable receiver through a turbulent period of offensive identities. When he entered the Transfer Portal seeking a system that could better prepare him for the NFL, it was a blow to the program and the fanbase.

Last night, in his debut for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Key showed exactly what Kentucky will be missing.

Fourth down heroics: Key Makes the Difference

In a tough, late-night battle against Cincinnati, Nebraska found itself clinging to a 13-10 lead late in the game. Facing a critical fourth down, quarterback Dylan Raiola looked for his new receiver, and Key delivered. He found a soft spot in the end zone, securing the touchdown that pushed the lead to 20-10. See the video below:

That catch proved to be the game-winner. Cincinnati scored quickly to close the gap to 20-17 and got the ball back with a chance to win, but a late interception sealed the victory for Nebraska—a victory made possible by the former Wildcat.

Key finished the night with 6 catches (tied for the team lead) for 51 yards and the decisive touchdown.

A painful reminder of what Kentucky lost

Seeing Key find the end zone in such a crucial moment is a bittersweet feeling for the BBN. On one hand, it's great to see a player who gave his all for Kentucky succeed on a new stage. On the other, it's a stark reminder of the talent that walked out the door. It really did not have to be this way, but 3 OC's in 3 years will tarnish anyone's chances. Plus, Stoops is heading back to a ground and pound style so the opportunities just won't be there.

In just one game, Key now has half as many touchdowns as he did during the entire 2024 season at Kentucky. That single statistic speaks volumes. The talent was always there; the opportunity, for whatever reason, was not. As Kentucky looks to find its own offensive rhythm this season, fans can only watch Key's highlights from Lincoln and think, "That could have been us."
