For Collin Chandler, last season was a period of difficult readjustment. After two years away from the game on a religious mission, he returned to the court still regaining his form and confidence. Now, heading into his second year in Mark Pope's system, Chandler is a completely different player, and his teammates are taking notice.

A full year of reps and recovery

Speaking with Field of 68, Chandler was asked how different he feels now compared to this time last year. "Not even close," he said emphatically. He explained the difficult road back, which was hampered by setbacks.

"I didn't play at all last summer 'cause I was ramping up," Chandler shared. "I came back in August and hurt my hamstring and that had me out another 8 weeks... I've just had all this time to play and get reps."

That full offseason of healthy, consistent work has clearly paid off. Chandler spoke with a newfound confidence about his game and his commitment to Coach Pope's vision, a vision he has believed in since high school. "I just wanted to play for Coach Pope," he said. "It just happens he was coaching an hour from my house... Three weeks before I got home from my mission, that's when the news came out that he was going to be here (Kentucky)." He followed Pope to Kentucky and the rest is history.

Stepping into a leadership role

That "bought-in" mentality has not gone unnoticed by his teammates. His on-court production is expected to explode this season, but his off-court value is already being felt. Teammate Kam Williams didn't hesitate when asked about Chandler's role.

"He is one of our leaders," Williams stated. "Every team needs someone like that on their roster."

Having a player who has been through adversity and emerged stronger is invaluable. Chandler's journey and his unwavering commitment to the program make him a natural leader. He's a player his teammates can look to for guidance, and it sounds like he is already embracing that crucial role.
