College GameDay in Eugene, Oregon, this week was running a special on Vanderbilt's big upset over top-ranked Alabama last week. At the very end of that show segment, College GameDay host Rece Davis reminded everyone that this week, the Commodores have to play Kentucky, and "Kentucky is better on defense than Alabama."

What a statement! Kentucky is better on defense than Alabama. This is true for the 2024 season. Kentucky is ranked in the top 5 in yards allowed per game, while Alabama is currently ranked 50th in the nation in the same category.

Kentucky is also ranked 11th in points per game, while Alabama is 41st. We could keep running through stats, but in every defensive category, the Wildcats are outperforming the Crimson Tide by a big margin. Therefore, the phrase "Kentucky is better on defense than Alabama" is completely accurate.

What makes it wild to hear is that Alabama is typically known as one of the powerhouses in both the SEC and the nation. Their defense is typically solid year in and year out. This year, not so much. They are still ranked 7th in the nation in the AP Poll but they haven't looked like the dominant team this year, especially on defense.

Vanderbilt exploited this fact and scored 40 points against the Crimson Tide, allowing them to upset them 40-35. This will go down as one of the biggest upsets of all time, and it's still currently the greatest of the season.

The jokes immediately started on College GameDay about the demise of Alabama. When signs used to say "We want Bama!" because they were the gold standard. This week, an Oregon fan held up a sign that said, "We want Vandy."

Kentucky takes on Vanderbilt tonight, so the Wildcats get the first crack at the Commodores after their huge upset over Alabama. And as Rece Davis said, Vanderbilt better be ready because Kentucky's defense is a whole lot better than Alabama's this year.
