It was a late night shocker for Kentucky basketball fans. At 1:20 AM, five-star forward Caleb Wilson announced his commitment to North Carolina, sending Carolina blue confetti raining down as he hit Charles Barkley’s iconic “guarantee” button in celebration. For Big Blue Nation, the announcement wasn’t a complete surprise, but it still stung.

Kentucky Fans Saw the Writing on the Wall

Leading up to the announcement, recruiting insiders Joe Tipton and Travis Branham both predicted Wilson would choose UNC, tipping the scales before the official word came down. Even with Kentucky in his final list of schools, momentum had clearly shifted toward the Tar Heels in the final hours.

Wilson, ranked as the No. 3 player in the 2025 class according to 247Sports, is known for his elite versatility, standing 6-foot-9 with a unique combination of size, athleticism, and ball-handling ability. He’s expected to be an immediate impact player at Chapel Hill, where Hubert Davis continues to reload with top-tier talent even during a down year.

A Tough Blow for Kentucky

For Kentucky, missing out on Wilson is a blow, but it does not feel as bad since this years team was built in the portal; and they're doing pretty good. Wildcats fans had high hopes that Mark Pope’s staff could close the deal, particularly after a strong push during Wilson’s visits to Lexington. Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed as Wilson chose to wear Carolina blue, a color that Kentucky fans are never eager to see on a top recruit.

What’s Next for Kentucky?

Though losing Wilson hurts, Kentucky’s recruiting efforts are far from over. With multiple five-stars still on the board for 2025 and the transfer portal, Wildcats fans can stay optimistic that reinforcements are on the way.
