Before Duke vs. Kentucky - The Lady Cats take on Wofford tonight, prediction, MVP, and how to watch
Earlier, we broke down what we believe is the biggest reason Kentucky has the potential for a deep run in the Women’s NCAA Tournament this year: The Clara Code
A puzzle teams are going to have to solve in order to beat the Cats. Freshman Clara Silva, a 6'7" international recruit, has quickly made an impact on both ends of the floor. Silva is currently averaging an impressive 16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 2 assists per game.
Yes, that’s 5 blocks per game, a defensive force Kentucky fans haven’t seen in years. Offensively, she’s just as effective, showcasing a smooth touch around the rim, and a nice touch from mid-range, she can do it all while serving as a true back-to-basket threat.
Alongside Silva is Clara Strack, another 6'7" talent who transferred to Kentucky after playing under head coach Kenny Brooks at Virginia Tech.
Strack is averaging 18 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 1 steal per game, nearly posting a double-double each time she hits the floor.
Strack’s court vision and passing ability add a unique dimension to Kentucky’s offense, and she’s making a strong case to be considered one of the team’s most impactful players.
Oh, and let’s not forget about All-American point guard Georgia Amoore
If there’s one area for improvement you should look for, it’s perimeter shooting. Kentucky is only shooting 25% from three, going 13 of 52 so far, despite consistently getting open looks.
However, this hasn’t affected the early season success, as they’ve won their first two games comfortably by margins of 59 and 25 points. It will, however, show up in close games as the season goes on.
Next up, Kentucky faces a Wofford team that’s also 2-0 and coming off double-digit wins of their own. The Terriers’ player to watch is 5'8" guard Libby Privett, who can knock down shots from deep and plays a central role in Wofford’s offense.
Keys to the Game
Kentucky’s significant size advantage should allow them to dominate in the post, especially since Wofford lacks anyone over 6'2" to challenge Silva and Strack. Expect Silva to have a big night on offense if the Wildcats take advantage of this mismatch.
Prediction:
Kentucky 77
Wofford 55
MVP
Clara Strack
