In a game projected to be a low-scoring slugfest, one play in the "third phase" of the game can be the difference between a win and a loss. For South Carolina, that third phase, special teams, isn't just a part of the game; it's an identity. It's called "Beamer Ball," and it's Kentucky's biggest hidden challenge this weekend.
A tradition of excellence

The "Beamer Ball" brand was born at Virginia Tech under Shane Beamer's legendary father, Frank Beamer, whose teams were famous for blocking kicks and scoring non-offensive touchdowns. Shane has carried that tradition to South Carolina. The results speak for themselves.
"Very very impressive just overall special teams, you know, that's Shane's expertise," Mark Stoops said in his weekly press conference, showing a high level of respect.

The biggest threat is return specialist Vicari Swain. He is a legitimate home-run threat every time he touches the ball. "In the return game with Swain, you know, he's been very dynamic with three touchdowns. Pretty impressive in in four games," Stoops noted.
Swain is averaging a staggering 30 yards per return and already has an 80-yard return to his name. Kentucky's coverage units, which Stoops called "very solid" so far, will face their ultimate test. They cannot afford to give Swain an opportunity to break the game open.
"This will be the biggest test of the year for us," Stoops admitted. "We need to continue to play well."
In a rivalry game where points will be at a premium, the battle between Kentucky's coverage units and South Carolina's explosive return game could be the single most important factor in deciding the outcome.
