There may have been just as many in Big Blue Nation watching the Arkansas vs. Kansas exhibition game as Razorbacks fans. If you search social media for "John Calipari," it is littered with Kentucky fans posting about their former coach. This has prompted some to say that Kentucky fans are basically jealous exes when it comes to John Calipari. Even Calipari's own daughter finds it wild that he continues to be viral:
You see one of the most prolific Twitter users in Big Blue Nation tweeting about Calipari, to the point that even TyTy Washington says, "Relax."
You have accounts that say, let me tweet about him. Let me talk about him and others, say let him go and forget about it. There's no competition and no need to get caught up in it.
So, here's the question: Is it fair that Big Blue Nation is compared to a jealous ex-lover? Should Kentucky fans stop caring about Calipari, or should they care? And it's simple, really; it's actually not complicated at all. Here's what should be noted: It's normal. It's absolutely normal for fanbases to care about the coach they had last. Shoot, Joker Phillips is always the first coach brought up whenever Mark Stoops is criticized.
It's not just the Kentucky fanbase; it's all fanbases. Do you know who is watching Alabama football struggle and smiling about it? Washington Husky fans. Do you know who is watching the Washington Huskies football struggle and smiling about it? Arizona Wildcat fans.
In the basketball world, Louisville is still watching Rick Pitino. Shoot, Kentucky fans are still curious bout Pitino. You see Florida fans watching Mike White at Georgia and Providence fans looking over the shoulder of Georgetown fans to see how Ed Cooley is doing.
All that to say, it's super normal and is part of the fun of college sports. Big Blue Nation should be curious about how Calipari will do at Arkansas. Some will want him to fail; some will want him to succeed, and some will tell you not to care and "focus on our own team." And all those perspectives are fine and normal and okay. So, in my opinion, are Kentucky fans too obsessed with John Calipari? Well, Big Blue Nation is one of the most passionate fanbases in the world; it would be weird to ask us to suddenly not be. It would be weird not to care about a coach who gave us so much, and we cared so much about it. So be passionate, even if it's about Calipari. That's what I say.
