Kentucky put all its eggs into the DeAndre Moore Jr. basket, and after a long, drawn-out battle, they came out on the losing end. During this time, they missed on Malcolm Simmons, who went to Texas A&M, and a host of other options. Moore now joining Deion in Colorado means Kentucky is low on wide receivers.
3 options Kentucky football can realistically sign from the portal
Now, before the list, let's preface this by saying that a player can jump into the portal at any time until the portal closes on Friday. They do not have to choose a school by then, but they have to at least be in the portal. If no one else does, these are the 3 guys Kentucky needs to go after.
Isaiah Fuhrmann, Elon
Landen Clark, the former Elon QB, visited the Cats and Michigan before signing with LSU, but one of his favorite targets remains on the board. Fuhrmann has visited the campus and, according to his former school, caught 46 passes for 907 yards and 9 TDs for a ridiculous average of 19.72 yards per catch.
Kyle Parker, LSU
Coming from the Bayou means he would be familiar with Joe Sloan's offense at Kentucky. He caught 31 passes for 330 yards and 4 TDs this past season. The ship has sailed on Syracuse's Darrell Gill Jr., as he is most likely headed to Ole Miss, but Kentucky may make a final push here.
Bodpegn Miller, Ohio State
At 6'3", Miller was a 4-star athlete who is still learning to play wide receiver. He redshirted this past year, meaning he will have 4 years to play.
There were some connections with Darrell Gill Jr. and Zion Kearney, but that ship has probably already sailed with Gill trending to Ole Miss and Kearney to Baylor.
Anything can happen between now and Saturday, so stay tuned, but as of right now, here is Kentucky's receiver room for Will Stein.
- Ashton Cozart (6-3, 197, Redshirt Junior): Came over from SMU and has a talented background as a top 250 player, but in his 3 years as a college player, he has just 1 catch for 24 yards.
- Xavier Daisy (6-3, 210, Junior): Coming over from UAB, Daisy had 177 yards on 18 catches.
- Ja’Kayden Ferguson (6-2, 187, Sophomore): Played in 6 games last year with no stats. Originally drawn to Kentucky before committing to Arkansas, now finds his way back to Lexington after a year in Fayetteville.
- DJ Miller (6-3, 204, Sophomore): 13 catches, 175 yards as a true freshman in the SEC; that is pretty good. But with a rash of transfer portal losses, Miller may be forced to take a big step forward.
- Brock Coffman (6-0, 180, Redshirt Freshman): The Lexington native is returning home after spending one season at Louisville. With a massive high school senior year, 1,530 yards, and 27 touchdowns, Coffman may be asked to rotate in this year.
- Kenny Darby (6-1, 180, Freshman): A record-setting receiver at Bossier City (La.) Airline, Darby led the state of Louisiana in receiving yards (1,754) as a junior. Darby is a potential plug-and-play addition to a room that may need a big-time playmaker.
- Denairius Gray (6-2, 185, Freshman): Gray is a high three-star recruit from South Florida for Kentucky with inside-outside versatility. The former Auburn commit is a slot receiver who is best over the middle.
- Prince Jean (6-1, 180, Freshman): Kind of a gadget player who is going to be involved in the quick game, jet sweeps, reverses, and screens.
- Davis McCray (6-2, 191, Freshman): A guy who plays outside the numbers, most likely needs a redshirt year if possible.
Will Stein will need to scheme some guys open if he can't find a proven WR in the portal, or it is possible you see a breakout player like Darby take off. The last 72 hours of the portal entry window will be fascinating.
