All signs and indications reveal that one of the top three Kentucky quarterbacks will be exiting the program. None of the three—Brock Vandagriff, Gavin Wimsatt, or Cutter Boley—are due to graduate. Vandagriff and Wimsatt have one year remaining, while Boley just finished his true freshman year. They all had time starting this season and showed glimpses of promise but also miserable performances to go with it. One will leave, or there's even a scenario where they all do. Let's examine.
We know that Mark Stoops plans to use the portal to pick up a quarterback. That is the biggest indication that he knows one or more are leaving. He has five quarterbacks currently on the roster if you count the two who signed in the early signing period. Stone Saunders and Brennen Ward will both be true freshmen this year. That's a lot of scholarships to put in the quarterback position; thus, we know he thinks at least one is leaving.
The problem is that none of Vandagriff, Wimsatt, or Boley were recruited to play in Hamdan's offense. This is one of the various reasons they all struggled at times to execute it. There is a scenario in which they all move on to other spots. Vandagriff and Wimsatt have to be thinking about it. They will be seniors next year and will want to start and play in their final year, not ride the bench.
There have been rumors that Vandagriff could retire from football, though there are no legs to that rumor (as of now). That resides in the world of speculation. He came out of high school as a 5-star quarterback and still has a lot of the tools and could thrive given the right situation and offense. It's a safe bet he is the one to leave.
Don't rule out Boley for departure either, even though he is a Kentucky kid. If he feels that the offense is going in the wrong direction, he may choose to move along. This is also only speculation, but we watched Dane Key decide to get out of Dodge.
We know one will leave. Which one? Or could it be all three? And who does Kentucky consider grabbing in the portal when it officially opens on December 9th? These are the questions that need to be answered in the coming weeks and months.
