A new name emerges internationally for Kentucky's urgent need at small forward

As Kentucky continues to search for a play-n-play option at small forward, a new, promising option has emerged beyond the pool of the transfer portal.

Tyran Stokes was always meant to be Kentucky's crown jewel at the three-spot for this coming season. That explains why Mark Pope stuck with his recruitment to its very bitter end; it also explains the Wildcats' current scramble for a replacement at that position.

With a small pool of names currently in the mix - Ryan Hampton may be the most probable - Pope and his staff are in the hunt for a small forward worthy of (at least a portion of) the NIL share that had been collecting dust in the trophy room in wait for Stokes.

Now, a new and potentially perfect competitor has entered the picture. Per Jamie Shaw, international forward Kamary Diakite is exploring the college avenue for the incoming year. If Kentucky isn't already involved, they absolutely should be.

Kentucky Should Pursue Kamary Diakite

Diakite is the latest in a long line of overseas players looking to leap to the NCAA, and Kentucky has, of course, shown interest in that field on numerous occasions. The recent commitment of Ousmane N'Diaye is one thing, but Pope has traveled out of the country in the short time since then to visit another recruit.

He has a prefernce for that route, and Diakite would click seamlessly into what appears to be an otherwise concrete lineup.

In the Swiss NBL this season, the versatile forward averaged 16.9 points and 6.7 rebounds, shooting a refined 48% in the process. At only 19, no less, Diakite has plenty of room to grow into a role in Lexington that would prioritize him.

A Mean Final Addition

He's a high-riser on the break with great burst. Diakite's ability to find his way through crowds and finish despite contact would also bode well in the SEC; alongside the likes of Alex Wilkins and Zoom Diallo, this would make a mean final addition to the Cats' body of scorers and playmakers.

Although, again, it's unclear if Kentucky is even planning to make contact here. I'm just issuing a warning that it wouldn't be at all surprising if Pope turns on the jets (perhaps literally) for Diakite. He's a scrappy, experienced forward that fits the structure Kentucky's coach has put together ahead of his third year.

Diakite joins the aforementioned Hampton, as well as Milan Momcilovic, as Kentucky's restricted share of apparent targets at small forward. Somehow, someway, the Wildcats need to find a way to land one.
