Double trouble – Matt Ponatoski becomes Kentucky’s top football and baseball recruit

In a recruiting twist few saw coming, Matt Ponatoski made Kentucky history by becoming the highest-ranked recruit in both football and baseball for the Wildcats’ 2026 class. That’s not a misprint—he’s that good.

On the gridiron, Ponatoski is a 4-star quarterback ranked No. 257 nationally by On3 and a recent Elite 11 finalist—no small feat in a year stacked with blue-chip talent. He boasts a live arm, dual-threat mobility, and leadership skills that have Power Five coaches drooling. He fits the mold of a modern QB, and Kentucky is betting big on his upside.

But Ponatoski’s arm isn’t just dangerous with the pigskin. On the diamond, he’s ranked No. 20 nationally by Perfect Game, with MLB scouts tracking his development closely. A power-hitting outfielder with plus speed and a cannon for an arm, he profiles as a potential Day 1 MLB Draft pick in 2026—assuming he makes it to college at all.

What’s even more remarkable is Ponatoski’s commitment to playing both sports in Lexington. In a social media announcement that caught fire, he confirmed his intent to suit up for both Mark Stoops and Nick Mingione. In a time when most two-sport athletes fade into myth, Ponatoski is attempting to become reality.

If he pulls it off, Ponatoski could become one of the most dynamic athletes in Kentucky history. He’ll follow in the footsteps of legends like Dione Sanders. Will Ponatoski be Primetime? Maybe, but as we mentioned earlier the 2026 MLB Draft will loom large. He could be a 1st round pick and that may be hard to turn down if he is going to seek a baseball career.

In an era dominated by NIL, early draft declarations, and sport specialization, Ponatoski is breaking the mold—and giving fans of both Kentucky football and baseball something to dream about for years to come.
