5-star commit Ryan Hampton gives Kentucky a special tie to the nation's top recruit

Kentucky's latest five-star commitment may give Mark Pope the inside track for the nation's No. 1 overall recruit.

Five-star recruit and No. 6 overall player in the nation (per 247Sports) Ryan Hampton just became Mark Pope's highest ranked grab ever on the high school front. While he'll have to wait until 2027-28 to take the floor in Lexington, Hampton is already forecasted as that Kentucky team's crown jewel.

But recruiting has really only just begun for the class after the current one, and while the Wildcats are off to perhaps the hottest one-commitment start in the nation, Hampton gives Coach Pope a real chance to turn up the heat even further.

As a litany of programs race after No. 1 overall recruit Marcus Spears Jr., with names like Texas, Arizona, Alabama, and Arkansas heavily involved, among others, Kentucky may have a special pitch to the power forward that no other suitor can claim.

Ryan Hampton and Marcus Spears Jr. are cousins. With the former already a confirmed Cat, you best believe Kentucky will be pitching a family reunion to the latter as his recruitment picks up steam.

A Family Reunion for Marcus Spears Jr.

Sam Lance, on The Field of 68, dove into this angle regarding Hampton's decision and the Spears Jr. sweepstakes: "Not only is this a huge win, but it's early in the cycle. Kentucky now has the highest-ranked committed player in the class, and he's going to be able to help recruit. He's cousins with the No. 1 player in the class, Marcus Spears Jr."

This is not simply wishful thinking from a Kentucky fan that wants to see it all come together for another banner. Mark Pope got his primary target in the class of 2027 and is in a position to utilize him in an all-in pitch for the top player in that group.

Spears Jr. even spoke with KSR about his relationship with Hampton, saying, "I have a real tight connection with him. That’s my brother, for real. We talk about it [the Kentucky offer]. We talk about basketball, we talk about games, we talk about life, and we talk about everything. That’s my brother, for real.”

With all of Coach Pope's wins as of late, the Tyran Stokes debacle seems so far removed from the present. The biting result of that whiff resulted in the head coach's career-best week of recruiting. Kentucky is on a tear, and the momentum is only rising.

Momentum on the Rise

Spears Jr. is described by Adam Finkelstein as "a lefty forward loaded with versatile long-term tools. He’s mobile, runs the floor well, and has effortless athleticism."

"He can put the ball on the floor a bit and is comfortable at the high post," notes Finkelstein. "Defensively, he can already slide laterally and protect the rim." Essentially, the 6-foot-9 forward does a little bit of everything. Next to Hampton at the supposed four-spot, Kentucky would have both their forwards fill out in a five-star fashion for the 2027-28 season.

It's early, of course, and still feels like a wild dream. Then again, so did returning Moreno and landing Momcilovic and Hampton, both. As a wise, mildly delusional Kentucky fan once said: "Never say never."
