Kentucky basketball takes the floor on Friday night looking to rebound after a hard-fought loss to #1 Kansas in the Champions Classic on Tuesday.
Even though UK came up on the short end of the stick, a few freshmen still played outstanding, giving even more reason to believe this could be the year Kentucky makes it back to the Final Four.
It was actually Kentucky’s bench freshmen who kept them in the game. Rob Dillingham had 18 points and shot 50% from the field. He made 4-of-5 from behind the arc and dished out 3 assists. Reed Sheppard also shot well, going 4-of-5 from the field and hitting 3 trifectas. Sheppard had 4 steals to go along with his 13 points.
The starting bunch was led by Antonio Reeves whose leadership was evident. Reeves had a team-high 24 points to go along with 8 rebounds. However, efficiency was a major issues. Reeves shot an absurd 17 threes and only saw 3 of them fall.
The poor shooting was a theme among the Kentucky basketball starting five. Justin Edwards didn’t make a single shot and DJ Wagner was 1-for-12. Together, those three scored 29 points on 8-of-43 shooting.
Kansas certainly exposed some flaws but it’s nothing coach Calipari and the Cats can’t work on. A game against Stonehill gives them a much easier task before two more high-level mid-major opponents.
