Shortly after 2 p.m. during Friday’s press conference, Johnuel “Boogie” Fland announced his commitment to coach John Calipari and the University of Kentucky basketball. Fland will be the second “Boogie” to play for Coach Cal. Hopefully, he will follow Demarcus “Boogie” Cousins’ charismatic, polarizing, and enthusiastic personality UK fans grew to love. Fland will join Somto Cyril in the 2024 class.

What should Kentucky basketball fans expect from Boogie Fland?

Fland’s recruiting ranking lists him as a top 3 player in New York, a top 5 guard, and a top 20 player in the entire 2024 class. Boogie checks in at 6-2, 170 lbs, and built from New York. He is a true two-way player who takes pride in his defensive IQ. He is a pesky defender who wants to force his opponent into bad decisions. Offensively, Fland is a creative, shifty guard who uses his dribble to create space for shots. Known more as a knockdown shooter in his younger days, he has evolved his offensive skills by becoming a lethal scorer at all three levels. Fland brings a toughness, gritty, and determined attitude to the court that will be exciting to watch transpire at Rupp Arena.

Boogie Fland is currently a senior at Archbishop Stepinac High School. Over the 2023 travel season, he played for PSA Cardinals on the EYBL circuit leading his team to a run at Peach Jam. Fland played in the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup where he won a Gold Medal. In the past two years, he was a participant at several prestigious camps and showcases including Pangos All-American Camp, Under Armour Elite 24, CP3 Elite Guard Camp, and Nike Skills Academy.

Kentucky basketball fans will be able to watch Fland’s High School team, Archbishop Stepinac, as they play in a few national events. The highly touted December event in Florida, the City of Palms Classic, and the coveted Hoophall event during MLK weekend in Massachusetts.
