Last week, Kentucky football had a struggle fest with their neighbors south in Eastern Kentucky and only won 28-17. The players that were brought up in last week’s edition of “Who needs to step up,” had great games. Let’s hope that matches this week.

Here are three players that need to step up in week 3.

1. Barion Brown:

Brown is the first choice just because of a lackluster start. The number one receiving option has only had nine receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown so far. It is time for Brown to introduce himself as one of the best receivers in college football, and the last non-conference game before SEC play starts would be a good time to do that.

2. Alex Afari Jr.:

After having a great start against Ball State, Afari had just an okay game against the Colonels. He had only one tackle and a fumble recovery against EKU. The week before, he had eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Afari will be a big-time player this season for the Cats defense. Kentucky football fans will hope he has the same week-one performance for the rest of the season, especially if opposing QBs dare to throw his way.

3. Ray Davis:

We all think he has had a good start so far, but even he would say he would have hoped to have a better game against Eastern Kentucky. Davis had 12 carries for 52 yards against the Colonels. That is being compared to his 14-carry, 112-yard, two touchdown game against Ball State. Big Blue Nation should expect Davis to have a good game this weekend against an Akron team that has been very good at defending the run this season.

The Cats take on Akron at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU on Saturday. This will be the final non-conference game before SEC play starts.
