SEC heavyweights:

  • No. 3 – Tennessee Volunteers (1-0)

Tennessee flat-out ran past Virginia, beating an ACC team by 36 points. Joe Milton Jr. didn’t pass for a whole lot of yards, and instead, the Vols went for 287 rushing yards and 5 scores on the ground. Defensively, Tennessee had 4 sacks and held UVA to a total of 201 yards. Being dominant on both sides of the football against another power conference team puts Tennessee in the top tier.

  • No. 2 – Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0)

I don’t need to spend much time analyzing Bama’s 49-point win over Middle Tennessee State. All that matters is that the Tide won by how much you’d expect them too. Now, they turn their attention to a game versus Texas. Last year, it was the early game of the year. This time, both teams are ranked inside the top 11. It could either cement Bama’s status as a top team in the country or hurt their chances at the College Football Playoff again.

  • No. 1 – Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)

The defending champs are once again the team to beat and showed their dominance in a 48-7 win over UT Martin. Funny enough, UGA meets Ball State this week, which will give Kentucky football a great way to see how they measure up with the Bulldogs. Alas, Georgia will be atop these power rankings until they slip up, or struggle to win a game. That likely won’t be a concern until much later in the season.
