3 reasons why Oscar Tshiebwe is a perfect fit for the Pacers
3. If you’re going to take a chance, use it on a Kentucky basketball player
This should really go without saying, but Kentucky basketball has a little bit of a history in getting players to the NBA. Of course, Tshiebwe has already accomplished the first step, which is signing on with a team.
From here on out the journey will become more and more difficult, but not impossible. Firsthand proof is Isaiah Jackson, who was the 22nd pick out of Kentucky by the Pacers in 2021, and has turned into a valuable role piece.
Of course, being a two-way player brings more challenges. Indiana won’t feel pressured to give Tshiebwe anything, because they didn’t use a draft pick on him. However, it does allow Tshiebwe to grow at his own pace in the G-League, and for the Pacers to give him a chance in the NBA while saving some money.
For Tshiebwe though, having that Kentucky basketball background may be his biggest calling card. Playing under John Calipari is like playing for an NBA coach. What Big O may lack in athleticism and outside shooting, he makes up for in knowledge of how the game is played at the highest level. Whether or not that will actually translate is the biggest question, but it’s undeniable that the foundation is at least there.
With the NBA 2k24 Summer League starting on July 7, Tshiebwe will be a hot name to follow, not just for Kentucky basketball fans. His first game with the Pacers will come against the Wizards on July 8. That will be the official start of the long journey ahead as Oscar Tshiebwe looks to make it in the NBA.
