Kentucky football: Will Levis falls out of first round – What’s next?
Kentucky football star QB Will Levis was a projected top-10 pick. He fell out of the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.
First, the Carolina Panthers took Bryce Young.
Then, the Houston Texans took a quarterback. It was CJ Stroud.
The Indianapolis Colts also took a QB. They went with Anthony Richardson.
27 more picks followed suit. None of them involved a quarterback, which means Kentucky football star Will Levis is by far the best available player on Friday night.
How did Will Levis drop so far in the NFL Draft?
A few reasons, really. After the Panthers, Texans, and Colts, no one really needed a quarterback that bad.
The Falcons, Titans, Commanders, and Vikings are all teams who are in play to draft a QB this year but also had other needs. So by not being a top-three quarterback picked, Levis wasn’t a surefire bet to be drafted. It’s just how the draft works sometimes.
Which team will take Levis?
Firstly, Levis won’t be on the board much longer. The Pittsburgh Steelers have the first pick of the second round and are rumored to be shopping that pick. Teams are interested in trading up to get Levis.
Teams are probably also shocked that Levis is still on the board. Kentucky football offensive coordinator Liam Coen was befuddled that his former QB wasn’t selected on Thursday.
I think the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will win up taking Levis. The Bucs were already a team rumored to take him in the first round, and shouldn’t pass up a second time. They have the 19th pick in the second round but have seven picks in the last five rounds. That’s a lot of draft capital that could be used to entice the Steelers to trade back.
Of course, Tampa Bay has a pressing need for a quarterback. Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are No. 1 and No. 2 at the moment. Levis has all the potential in the world earn the starting QB job over them.
We will continue to track where Levis is drafted, as well as other Wildcats throughout rounds 2-7.
