March is upon us quickly and the madness is about to go into hyperdrive as the Kentucky basketball team looks to finish the regular season on Saturday with a sweep of rival Florida.

Can you believe we are at the end of the regular season now with game 31 concluding what has been a very strong, sound, and fun couple of months to fall in love with this UK team? The visions and dreams of another national championship banner hanging in the rafters at Rupp dance in Big Blue Nations head and it’s not a dream it’s very realistic.

Coach John Calipari prepares his team for this every year and nothing gets him more excited than when he has a solid team entering March with a shot to make a deep run. That is the case this year and he brought it up this week.

"“All I’m saying to my team – everything I’ve done all year is to prepare you for March. You won’t believe this – we’re in March right now. Let’s see what happens.”"

Kentucky basketball heads into March looking to quiet Gators

March starts though with a trip to Gainsville and the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. It will be loud and crazy but Gator fans have seen an inconsistent team this season with big wins including over Auburn and a head-scratching loss to Texas Southern.

In Lexington two weeks ago Kentucky used a massive second half that led to a 78-57 romp. But it also sidelined TyTy Washington who was injured in the game suffering a leg injury. Watching him wince in pain and hop one-footed across the court and to the UK locker room was a scary sight.

Shavir Wheeler was also ailing but both have nearly returned to their early season form and Florida will give us a better indication of just how healthy they are. The junior hands out 7 assists per game to go with 10 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.

The big focus of the course is the paint where Oscar Tshiebwe and Colin Castleton of Florida will go toe to toe.

Castleton, a senior, pumps in 16.1 points and snares 9 rebounds per game. The Gators also get 11.4 points and 3.8 assists from senior Tyree Appleby. He can shoot the 3 pointers and Florida will probably need to hit about a dozen from behind the arc if they hope to win the game.

Castleton’s adversary will be a double-double machine in Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebw who tallied his 12th straight double-double on Wednesday and is the first Wildcat to do that since Dan Issel had 12 consecutive double-doubles in the 1969-70 season.

Kentucky vs Florida Prediction Today

Kentucky leads the overall series 106-41

The Wildcats (24-6, 13-4) capped off a perfect winning season at home this season going 18-0 marking the 14th undefeated home season in the 46-year history of Rupp Arena. Calipari has guided six undefeated teams at Rupp in his 13 years in Lexington.

They played well on offense against Ole Miss in their 83-72 win, but their defense lacked focus and let the Rebels hang around the entire game.

Kellan Grady knows it’s something that needed cleaning up.

"“I think the biggest thing is that we’ve had some lapses with scouting and being assignment-sound. But I think ultimately, we’ve guarded at critical times well enough and that’s why we’ve been able to win three of our last four. But those are things that we’ve addressed and that we’ve got to clean up.”"

Florida (19-11, 9-8) has beaten Georgia and Vanderbilt after losing to Arkansas.

My prediction is Kentucky 75, Florida 69

Kentucky’s Next Game and Upcoming Schedule

Kentucky has concluded the regular-season schedule. They will head to Tampa, Florida for the SEC Tournament that begins Wednesday at the Amalie Arena. The exact seeding will have to wait until all games are completed on Saturday as there is a logjam currently throughout.

A win and Kentuck would be a No. 3 seed, but if they lose to the Gators the Wildcats will be the No. 4 seed.

Should UK defeat the Gators they would tie for first or second place in the SEC standings. Unfortunately, due to the tie-breaker scenarios, Kentucky will be guaranteed the No. 3 seed and play Friday at 8 p.m.

A loss at Florida would leave Big Blue tied for third place in the standings and those tiebreakers again would drop Kentucky to the No. 4 seed and a 2 PM tip on Friday.
